"Arise, walk in the land through its length and its width, for I give it to you" (Genesis 13:17). That was the Scripture God had given John Halvorsen as he was praying about what he was to do next in America. But what did that mean? Surely, John thought, God was not asking him to take that verse literally. Or was He? As he prayed and shared the vision with his wife, Sandy, and others, John came to the realization that God wanted him to walk across the length and width of America, praying for this nation, and raising up others to pray as well. He enlisted the help of Ron Olson and his wife, Linda, and the ministry of Prayer Walk America had begun. In September of 1998, John stepped away from the Canadian border in Minnesota and began a journey down the length of the Mississippi River to the Gulf of Mexico. It was a 1745-mile walk that took 104 days to complete. But that was only the beginning. The team then went to the state of Oregon and John began walking east from the Pacific Ocean. Walking across 12 states and Washington, D.C., he walked through the heart of America until he reached the shore of the Atlantic Ocean in Delaware. This final stage of the walk took seven months and seven days to complete. Altogether, it was about a 5,000 mile prayer walk. Throughout the walk, John ministered in churches of every size and affiliation, and spoke to literally millions of Americans through an unprecedented outpouring of coverage by newspapers, radio and television stations. He was also featured in Christian magazines such as Charisma and Worldwide Challenge (read that article here), as well as on national Christian radio programs such as the Billy Graham Association’s program, Decision Today. What touched him most, however, was the way God would demonstrate His love for the people John and Sandy met everyday along the walk. People would always come up to John and ask what he was doing, and after explaining about his walk and that he was praying for the nation, John would ask them a question of his own: “How can I pray for you?” That simple question would often bring a wave of emotion. People knew they had needs or hurts that were affecting their lives, and they were just waiting, hoping, that someone would have the compassion enough to reach out to help them. When John reached out his hand to pray, it was the love of Christ that these people experienced, and for many, their lives were never the same again. After continuing to minister in a number of states in America, this call to the nation and the ministry of Prayer Walk America came to an end in the spring of 2003.
